Air Plant: Tillandsia
Latin Name: Tillandsia
Tillandsia is a genus of neotropical epiphytic plants belonging to the bromeliad family, Bromeliaceae. All Tillandsia are referred to as air plants due to their ability to grow without any soil. In their native environment, they can be found growing on top of tree branches, cliffs, and even telephone wires!
Light requirements: Filtered bright light is best, as too much direct sunlight can cause the plant to sunburn). Plants can tolerate more direct sunlight during the winter months.
Water requirements: Submerge your air plants in water for an hour once a week. Shake off excess water and allow to dry completely upside down in order to rid the core of any standing water. If not dried properly the core of the plant will begin to rot. Intermittent misting is acceptable but not a replacement for full soakings.
